Making fabric cover buttons at home

Here is a blog post on making fabric cover buttons. Ever wondered how those customise buttons are made? on clothes read further on. By knowing how to make these type of buttons it will give a home sewer wider range of buttons to use. I had in the past one of friends asking me how I made these buttons. It is also possible to make them by a specialist shop. Some haberdashery shops do have a special press that makes fabric cover buttons.

To make fabric cover buttons one will need a kit that is sold in haberdashery shops or online for it. John Lewis and Minerva crafts do sell them online. I use the brand called Prym for this fabric cover button. The base and cover is made out of metal as it is mouldable and strong.

In the pack depending on the size, require they come from 3 to 6 in a pack. It does come with a set of instructions. They do also come with an applicator to make it easier to make. However, it is not essential. It is possible to put it together by hand.

Basically the components come in two pieces. A part where the fabric goes over and the base where it holds the fabric further in place. The part where the fabric goes over has got tiny zigzag teeth that hold the fabric in place. if you are doing ti without the applicator just place the fabric over this zigzag teeth so as to hold the fabric in place. Once it is done all round then place the place.

I also find it easier for a small fabric cover button to cut extra fabric. Once it is in place on the zigzag teeth trim the excess fabric away. this done before is put over in place. Once the base is in place it is not easy to undo it again. It has to be tight for the fabric cover button don’t fall apart.

Thank you for dropping by for my other sewing post here is one on sewing buttonholes and buttons.
