This is a blog post on how to make hummus at home. With current times it is increasing more on how to cook at home as much as possible. Hummus is one of them as it uses chickpeas as the main ingredient in which is good. Chickpeas are available in canned or dried form as well. This means chickpeas can be bought ahead of time and they can last for a long time. It is possible to substitute this ingredient of this recipe to suits one’s taste and use whatever is on hand.

Using dried chickpeas

If one is using dried chickpeas do soak them for at least 2 days to soften them. The chickpeas do expand a bit once soaked with water so do give them room and provide lots of water. If using canned chickpeas it can be used straight away just drain off the liquid before boiling it. Otherwise, if the liquid is kept while boiling it might just burn or becomes just too starchy. Another possibility is to save the liquid to use it as an alternative to eggs. The liquid is called Aquafaba. 3 tablespoon of chickpea liquid replaces 1 egg. For this recipe, you will also need a blender or a big pestle and mortar. It is also optional to tahini paste as they do indeed have a peculiar taste like bitter or rancid if they are old.

Hummus recipe

An easy to make recipe that good to eat as snack or accompaniment

  • 1 can hummus (400 grams or equivalent soaked dried chickpeas )
  • 2 cloves garlic (peeled)
  • half juice of lemon
  • 1 zest lemon
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • A sprinkle red pepper
  • 2-3 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp tahini paste

Cook the chickpeas

  1. Drain the liquid from the canned chickpeas. No need if using hydrated dried chickpeas. Boil it with a bit of water (250 MLS) till it's cooked. When the chickpeas are soft then it is cooked. Do reserve some of the boiling liquid this so to loosen the hummus while blending.

Making Hummus

  1. In blender start blending the chickpeas add the olive oil and tahini. Then add the garlic and cumin powder. Add a bit of boiled chickpea liquid to loosen the hummus. When it is well blended. It is ready to serve with a sprinkle of red pepper powder on top.
