Elderflower cordial making it at home

This is a blog post on how to make elderflower cordial at home. Elderflower comes from elderflower tree which is easy grown. To make this cordial you will need to find some fresh elderflower. They are normally available some time end of April to early June. As they are easily grown they are found along in public foot paths and parks.

Elderflower cordial tastes are lovely as a summer drinks. It is great for all ages. It’s a lovely activity to pick the flowers and make them into a drink. Elderflower tree is quite easy to grow as well. If you can get hold of a fresh elderflower you can grow a tree. Mind you the tree does take a few to start flowering. While elderflower cordial can be easy to make. The key to making a successful cordial is not to boil the elderflowers at all. Otherwise, there will be a strong pungent smell that doesn’t smell that nice at all. If that happens just pick some more up fresh elderflowers and start all over again. Just boil the sugar syrup then pour it over the elderflowers. Let is to seep overnight. Do add a slice or two of lemon or even lemon juice. The lemon seems to add some citrusy flavour to the cordial.

INGREDIENTS  

  • 1 pot elderflowers a pot full
  • 6-8 tbsp sugar
  • 1 lemon sliced or juiced

INSTRUCTIONS 

Cooking sugar syrup

  • In a pot add 500 – 800 ml of water add the sugar and make a syrup. Bring the water to boil then add the sugar. Turn the heat off once the sugar is dissolved.
  • Making the cordial
  • Clean and wash the elderflowers to get rid of dirt and bugs. Add the sugar syrup then add the lemon. Leave it overnight so that the flavors infuse.
